Claiming a vat refund for solar panels

When you have solar panels installed, you are entitled to the full 21 per cent VAT refund for your installed solar panel system. This is because, as a solar panel owner, you generate your own energy, which you also feed back into the grid. Therefore, you can regard yourself as a small energy supplier thanks to solar panels. This also extends to the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration (Belastingdienst) and VAT. This is why the VAT refund for solar panels can be very favourable where rebates and the amount are concerned.

Vat declaration to the dutch tax and customs administration free of charge

The VAT reimbursement is standard in our service, so you can fully benefit from your self-generated power from your solar system without any concerns. We do not charge any fees for this VAT declaration service. We register you temporarily as an entrepreneur with the Tax and Customs Administration for a declaration via the SME VAT Exemption scheme (KOR). After receiving the VAT reimbursement, the VAT amount will be refunded to your account. Often, you will receive the VAT back that same year.

Claiming the vat refund for solar panels by filing your tax return to the tax and customs administration

Immediately after the installation of your solar panels, you will receive an email from Sunleaves in which you can easily fill in a number of standard details. This allows you to claim your VAT refund by submitting a tax return to the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration. On the basis of these details, we apply for a VAT number for you and file a VAT refund declaration on behalf of your own energy company. After the VAT refund is received, we cancel the VAT number and you are then exempt from VAT and administrative duties as an entrepreneur.

You won’t notice much of this procedure and will automatically receive the VAT amount back on your account after a few months. So you pay the amount including VAT, but the ultimate investment includes the net amount on your quote, without VAT. Claiming a VAT refund requires no effort on your part. So you can easily get the VAT amount on solar panels back from the Tax and Customs Administration for entrepreneurs or private individuals via the SME VAT Exemption scheme (KOR).

CLAIMING A VAT REFUND FOR FINANCING FOR HOME SUSTAINABILITY PROJECTS

Even if you have your solar panels financed over a longer term, you are entitled to claim a VAT refund. Despite not making a VAT investment yourself, you will still be refunded the VAT amount to your account. Given that you can make unlimited and penalty-free repayments via Duurzaam Thuisfinanciering (Sustainable Home Financing), you can choose to use the refunded VAT to repay part of your solar or solar panel system loan.

Exceptions in the case of the SME VAT Exemption scheme (KOR) and integrated solar panels

If you are already an entrepreneur for the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration, for example, as a self-employed person or owner of a sole proprietorship, you will already have a personal VAT number for sales tax and file your VAT declaration via the SME VAT Exemption scheme (KOR).

As you can only have one personal VAT number, we cannot apply for an additional VAT number on your behalf for the VAT on solar panels. We will use your current VAT number for your sales tax to claim via a declaration your VAT refund from the Tax and Customs Administration.

We can claim the VAT refund on your existing VAT number. However, we cannot cancel the number for you after the VAT refund; after all, it is linked to your business. This means that the revenue from your solar panels will be included in your turnover from your business and you will consequently continue to pay tax on your own generated energy.

Claiming a VAT refund on solar panels on a new VAT number

If you have a partner who is not an entrepreneur, in most cases we can still claim the VAT refund on a new VAT number in your partner’s name.

Flat-rate tax and VAT on solar panels

The Dutch Tax and Customs Administration levies a one-off flat-rate tax on your installed solar panel system. This flat-rate tax amounts to 20 euros per 1,000 Wp of installed panels and is offset against your VAT refund for integrated solar panels.
